Rand Pecknold built Quinnipiac into a national powerhouse in Men’s Ice Hockey. Starting with midnight practices and Division III status in 1994, Rand and his Quinnipiac Bobcats reached the pinnacle, capturing the 2023 NCAA Division I National Championship. Beating the likes of Michigan and Minnesota along the way, Rand and his team cemented themselves as a top program in the country. Rand built the program from scratch, establishing its culture, commanding respect and developing quality young men.
Rand’s coaching legacy began 31 years ago, when he was just a part-time head coach, practicing at a town rink, after long days teaching high school history. Rand drove 71 miles daily to teach while chasing his dream. Now, Rand stands as the active Men’s Division I wins leader (666 victories), with multiple national coach of the year awards and three Frozen Fours appearances. He has won the ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year Award five times, the most in the league’s history, has served as head coach of Team USA at the 2023 World Junior Championships and as an assistant coach for Team USA at the Men’s World Championships in 2017 and 2018.
Rand has traveled the long hard road of building a program from the ground up, facing difficult odds yet paying attention to every detail encompassing team development, arena construction and overall QU hockey branding. Rand knows that each and every decision matters, and every person plays a role in his journey. Rand can speak to the tenets of Leadership, Teamwork, Commitment, Innovation and Strategy.
Rand knows how to motivate and bring the best out of people.
